Revenant
Cherry's trumpet saw you in
like the herald angels sing
inviting yourself in for dinner
features pinched looking thinner
Skin pulled tight expressionless eyes
skin tight jeans on thinning thighs
you say you love me, you want to come back
don't you remember the stick and the flak?
The chapter's shut on your part of my life
you caused me too much trouble and strife
you toss your hair in that familiar way
you're different now, despite what you say
I think it's sad that it's turned out like this
you can't turn back time because of a kiss
your face is wrinkling, crow's feet etched in light
in the words of the Dead , I bid you goodnight.
Footnote:1. "Cherry" refers to the late jazz musician Don Cherry
2. The "Dead" refers to the Grateful Dead and the song
"I Bid You Goodnight", which they used at the close of their concerts
in the '60s.
