Autumn in Haigh Country Park
The trees guide you in,
lining the crunchy path
like ushers at a wedding.
The dusk tonight not threatening
is gold and pink.
It smiles for shepherds.
Apple blossom falls like confident snow
to the base of the trees.
A dripped candlewax coating.
One nodding bluebell stands above
the scarlet toadstools
waiting to be picked or kicked
by the next cubscout pack to pass,
or the teenage lovers
who sneak down at this time
to escape their parents
and share the dark.
The ground seems so warm,
everything so natural.
The sunlight is fading.
A fairytale evening.
