Valentine Box

Alice was awoken by the thudding of her brother's footsteps up the
staircase, the toast shooting out of the toaster, her mother pouring
the pans of hot water into the bath tub and her father slamming the
back door and kicking off his sooty boots. But these sounds didn' t
really stand out out enough for her to open her eyes, they weren't out
of the ordinary.
Then it came, first the whistle, then the gate creaking and lastly the
sound of crisp letters gliding through the letterbox and fluttering
onto the doormat.
In her floral nightgown and slippers, she raced to the door, first
observing the colours, all white, no red, secondly, the adressees, no
Miss, no hearts and no flowers.
Just as her eyes began to swell with tears, the doorbell sounded
urgently. In a lethargic manner, she slowly opened the door. The
postman was holding out a small box in front of him, bearing her name.
ALICE.
She thanked the postman and skipped off to her room, leaving him
standing empty handed on the doorstep. "Don't you want to know where
its from.." his voice trailed off into the distance.
Now in total privacy, Alice gently removed the red ribbon. With her
engraved letter opener, she neatly cut open the sealed edges of the
box. Inside the box were layers of soft, delicate tissue paper
concealing the treasure that lay within, and a note ontop.
The Note read: I lost my eyes looking for you!!!
Sitting on the edge of her bed, she tore at the tissue in a frenzy of
delight.
Alice let out a piercing scream and dropped the valentine's box to the
ground. As her mother and the postman wrestled with the door handle,
Alice stood transfixed at the bloodied eyeballs which rolled out across
the floor, protruding veins clearly visible and black liquid oozing out
of any gashes which had been inflicted.
Her mother entered the room to comfort her and the postman muttered "As
I was saying, don't you want to know who its from?......Its from Harry
&; Sons round the corner, Butcher Blake's son Kevin, I seem to
remember!"
