Orange.

For many years now, as part of self-care, ‘easy style,’ I decided to have an orange each day with my cod liver oil. I used to have the smallest oranges I could find, which in my superstore was the cheapest. Then last month as I left one superstore, as their rewards were rubbish, I decided to use the superstore next to Mums flat, and there ‘discovered’ larger oranges! From then I haven’t looked back, yes it cost a bit more, but it is definitely worth it.
With the big new found oranges I don’t just cut them into quarters, I cut each quarter again, to make 8 sections. Oranges are SO messy, it is amazing they are still around, for I have never seen anyone eat one at work, they are very juicy and wet and get everywhere it you let it! So, I have my oranges at home, where I can enjoy them in peace. After each orange in the morning, I each for a tissue from the box near to me and wipe my mouth and hands, then I walk to the kitchen and wash my hands. Oranges, they are 10 out of 10. On a few occasions I have been known to have an orange in the evening too, so that would make two that I’ve had in a day. For me it is the best fruit, I like a banana second, no mess at all there.
We can all learn something new every day, I learnt something new this week. I bought Jaffa oranges, and when I got home, I read the label on it, it said it was grown in South Arica! I didn’t know that; I thought all Jaffa oranges were grown in Isreal.
Since covid, I have rinsed for a second, under the tap, each orange before I cut it up.
Something I also learnt this week about oranges, when I looked at the label, that I wished I had not seen.
On the label it said it is treated with:-
Imazalli/2,4-D/Pyrimethanil/Thiabendazole
Wax E914, E903
MERCY!!!!!!!!!!!!
What the heck is that! So, really putting the orange under the tap for a second meant nothing!
That is more than enough to put me off from eating oranges again.
Why do they have to come all the way from South Africa? I wonder is that why it is treated? So that it will last and last? The taste is amazing and the juice is awesome, but to know that it is treated, no wonder some people always read the labels first before they buy things! I also understand now why sometimes it is best to buy organic! No treatment there.
I think I might just go back to the small, grown UK ones, that haven’t had to travel too far, almost local.
Spain isn’t that far from the UK; there is lots of hot sun there, to soak into the oranges.
I think I will Google where to get the best value oranges from … the big ones they were good while it lasted. x
