The End of Bill Buckley

Bill Buckley and Adam Wheeler sat underneath a tree for shade on a
hot summer day, in the Wild West. The two were good friends but Bill
had found out something about Adam that he held deep inside at that
very moment. Adam had slept with Bill's wife and Bill's soon to be born
son could easily have been Adam's. The two talked as Bill held this
secret in the pit of his stomach, wanting to confront his friend. As
Adam speaks jokingly about this woman he made love to the other night,
Bill spits out "Wasn't my wife now was it?" Adam looks at him
curiously. Bill says, "Go on and say it, you took advantage of my
wife!" Adam tries desperately to prove his innocence. "Don't lie to me!
Don't lie to me again!" Adam once again tells Bill that he has not
slept with his wife. In one quick motion, Bill pulls a revolver from
his pants and shoots Adam in the head, sprinkling the tree with ruby
red blood. "I hate when people lie to me," reveals Bill as he wipes
down his precious revolver and sticks it back in his pants. Bill looks
around to see if anyone is around, but they are miles from anyone. He
gets up and moves to the corpse of his former friend and starts
pillaging the body. He takes some coins from a pocket and his boots off
his feet and walks away, back toward home.
A few days after the murder occurred, an arrest warrant is put out for
Bill Buckley. Cocky Bill turns himself in, knowing that they have no
proof. Bill has a good alibi and no witnesses saw him do it. The two of
them were miles from anything when it occurred. Bill is brought to
court and the evidence is little more than knowing that the last time
Adam was seen, he was with Bill. Bill spits out his alibi of getting
separated and having gotten lost himself. A reasonable alibi and
accepted by all in attendance, except for one person. The father of
Adam Wheeler asks to speak in court. He does not believe that the two
were separated and have proof that Bill was indeed the killer. He asks
everyone in the court "Please look at Bill Buckley and take particular
notice of his feet." On Bill's feet are the boots he stole from Adam. A
much nicer pair than his own, the reason he wore them into court.
Without hesitation, Bill Buckley is sentenced to death by hanging at
the gallows.
