Chapter 3

 

A Night At The Lighthouse

.
They were  swept around in an angry sea under a night sky hoping and praying  for an eye in the storm so they could be out of danger .

Then like a miracle it happened . At first they say the bean from a lighthouse cut through the darkness and then a calmness to  the sea and the wind and rain stopped

As the yacht made its way to the lighthouse Harry saw a mooring post beside a wooden platform and supported by four strong pillars . There were some steps that made their way from the platform to the door of the lighthouse and he had a notion to pay the lighthouse keeper a visit so he took the yacht close to the flatform and was able to attach a rope from the boat to the  to the mooring post .  Feeling safe and encouraged Harry and his Mammy made their way to the lighthouse door which had been left open

:“Hello is anybody there ?

Harry called out three times but no one answered .

Then an old man appeared from the top of the stairs .

“You’re not dangerous pirates I hope ?”

He said .

Maisie replied ,

“No we’re just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl “

Harry laughed .

“Don’t take me Mammy serious  sir . It’s one of her favourite things to say whenever she meets new people “

The lighthouse keeper laughed and said .

“Hello there , I’m Mike and for over forty years I’ve been living here in this pace and you’re the first people who has ever come to visit . “

“Well Mike it’s so nice to meet you . I’m Maisie . Forty years in a light house . is a lifetime . It must be a lonely job “

“Well Maisie I try to keep busy doing different things . “

“Hi Mike I’m Harry . What kind of things do you do ?”

Harry asked and the lighthouse keeper replied .

“Well I’ve taught my pet walrus to talk and I have a whale who comes by to visit . Then I built the flatform just in case anyone , just like you would ever want to call in to say hello “

“Did you really teach a walrus to talk?”

Maisie asked .

Nodding his head he said with a smile  ,

“Well maybe you need an introduction and just for your information , he not one of your ordinary everyday walruses . He’s big Daddy Gus the walrus with an extra tusk from the lost isle of Fusspots and Forget-me-nots . Ok come and meet Gus “

The lighthouse keeper brought them to another room in a basement of the lighthouse where there was an inbuilt swimming pool .

A large walrus came to greet. . Balancing on leg he reached out the other .

Harry reached out his hand and said .

“Wow hello there , my just look at you .“

Gus the walrus said ,

“Hi there , I’m Big Daddy Gus the talking walrus . Please to meet you >

Maisie also shook Gus’s outstretched leg and said ,

“ So nice to meet you .‘”

“ I’m sure the pleasure’s all mine:”

The walrus said and then balanced on his tail and clapped his two legs together . Mike went and gave Gus a snack . .

“You’re a legend Gus “

Harry said

The lighthouse keeper said ,

“Gus is no different to us , you know , all he needs is someone to talk to .

Gus went over and stood beside Mike and said .,

“Before I met Mike , I was living on thin ice looking for another place to go and in life you never know what can happen because I found this underwater cave and just as went inside there I saw an igloo and I thought , that’ll do , it’s as good as a home for  me “

Mike continued,

“That’s when I first met Gus . I had built a floating igloo in my spare time in the hope to invite someone to come and visit for a while . I tried to make the igloo  homely with a warm blanket and blow-up mattress but never expected a big Daddy walrus like Gus to drop by”.

“ As long there is shelter and someone who cares , is all I’ll  never need “

Said Gus  .

“As long as we have love everything  will be ok “

Said Mike .

“Absolutely “

Maisie replied .and Gus said.

“Why worry about tomorrow when we are here today .Tell me what we can do  if the snow melts or the sky falls down on us . We are here today and life’s ok as long as we care for each other “

“You really do have an extra tusk “

Harry said .

‘Yes, that’s the gift I was given and its filled with knowledge and wisdom “

“Tell me Gus is there any advice for people who are unhappy with life ?”

Maisie asked and Gus replied ,

“The best advice I can give is just to capture a smile anyway you can and keep it and share it with everyone you meet and as long as you do that , happiness will always live in your heart “

“How old are you Gus >

Harry asked ,

“My long white tusks have taken thirty of your human years to grow which is equivalent to about two walrus years “

“Thank you for talking to us today, Gus “

Mike said and handed over another snack .

Harry said

“It’s time for us to go now Gus .we’re on a voyage of discovery “

 

Gus replied  .

“ Then go and see what need to find and discover even more than you hope to find “

 

Reaching out again with an outstretched leg they all shook hands and left the room . They noticed the door opened by itself .

Mike said ,

“Its must have been the wind “

:I guess it’s time for us to go Mike “

 After saying their goodbyes Maisie and Harry returned to the yacht and set sail for a new horizon as the sun rose on a bright new day .
