Dreams Beyond The Milly Dam
By Paul McCann
There once were two swans in the Milly dam
with two big flapping feet..
Sometimes you’d see them walk from the dam
to the school in Butler street .
As the days went by they would fly away
To somewhere far beyond .
I often wondered where they went
and where they dreaming in another pond.
I called them Jigger and Jagger
and I hoped they’d come back again..
To their nest beside the Milly dam
where the school kids often came .
.Did they dream of distant places
where they could sing their own swan song .
Did they know the thrush and nightingale
or the duck that quacked all day .
How on Earth could they navigate
from those places so far away .
The two swans yawned and closed their eyes
then they rested their little head .
And dreamt of fairy trees and bumble bees
with honey on their bread .
Progress came and they drained the dam
and there was no place they could hide.
So they just flew away
and have not returned again to this day .
