Chapter 1
Mable’s Stables
Mable Sniggers lived inside an old railway carriage that was refurbished into a comfortable little home not far away from the old railway shunting track that had once been a hub of activity back in the day before the electric trains were introduced to the transport system and as a result the old diesel trains were left to the side and never used again . A similar story to Danny Skinner and his horse and carriage tours who once had a thriving business with several horse and carriages that were hired for weddings , funerals , sightseeing trips , romantic evening rides around the countryside for many courting couples nut when cars came on to the scene gradually Danny and his horses became a thing of the past and rarely were they ever seen around the place again. .
Danny ended up retiring and moving his horses to some stables he built near to the railway station . He built a house on the land to look after his horse and carriages that were put to one side to make room for progress as most people now used the preferred way to get around town in their own cars . Danny lost the only way of life he had known and soon became ill . Then he was unable to look after the horses.
People told him to send the horses to the glue factory but he didn’t have the heart to do that so he asked Mable who lived near the stabled if she could take on the job of feeding and watering the horses every day and he would be happy to pay her for her time . Mable was happy to help and each day and the extra money would help he buy materials for doing her murals around the place .
| When Mable first saw the state of the old stables, she immediately had ideas of how to bring the old stables alive with a new coat of paint and some special artwork to make them something unique . It was a slow and difficult task that required a lot of preparation so she thought about moving into to one of the stables to eliminate her travelling there now and then and allow her to work full time on the stables .Several of the old stables were in good condition the rest were run down and required some restoration . Mable was now feeling more comfortable with the horses around her and for moving in to one of the stables was a good decision for her to connect with the horses in a nice way . They also got to know her and a bond of trust was developed . She loved to talk with the horses as if they were people and part of that closeness invited a dream like existence to fall down around the place. So, in her new home there Mable was as happy as she had ever been . She had always lived in a daydream world and accepted everything that came into her life as part of that dream . So, there she had abandoned herself to that moment in time and inspiration began to flow . Like a vision of some mystical tale, she connected a theme with each stable in walkways with little fairy gardens outside and white posts all around them like those seen on race tracks .
It wasn’t long before the local council saw what was happening and Mable had lots of questions to answer as the stables were on government owned land . She spoke to Dan about the issue and he was able to provide a copy of a gifted deed from an old friend of his who was in politics that donated part of the land for Dan and his horses with approval for stables to be constructed . Following that the local council could see the potential there for a public resource area with children’s playgrounds and picnic tables areas for the public to walk . Mable was given permission to proceeded with the Mables Stables project and now there were lots of onlookers arrived to see the progress with offers to help and support her work financially and in other ways . Mable started preparing the stables for the initial undercoating work . Every Saturday morning people showed up with offers to help .A man brought along a mobile gas barbecue and cooked for free bacon and eggs for anyone who wanted . Local business people got on board with the project now knows as “Mables Stables” and hardware stores provided paint and brushes , also timber , nails , sandpaper , sand and cement all for free . Then in came handymen and tradesmen offering for free their skills to do with reconstruction work at Mables Stables . This help was invaluable because it allowed Mable to focus on working with her dream artwork on the murals . Gardeners put in little gardens around the stables which were to be maintained by the community with the locals invited to plant vegetables and flowers . Everything was working just like a dream and Mable had already a theme for the murals on the stables that depicted mystical creatures , like flying horses , unicorns , dragons , rainbows and wishing wells which added a special magic touch . During the work Dan who owned the stables was now unwell and was admitted as a resident of an aged care facility . His health had declined and even though he had no idea of all the work been done to his old run down stables he was named the patron of Mables Stables and before the official opening day Dan was given the job to cut the ribbon and welcome everyone into the walkways and gardens known as Mables Stables . Before he passed away Dan saw children having hands on with somebody his horses and the joy it brought to his face was almost a glimpse of heaven for him
