The Devil's Deal
"I'll buy your soul," the Devil said
"I'll take your spirit away,
I'll draw the essence from your complex life
Leaving simplicity every day.
I'll remove your troublesome sorrow
And erase your angst and tears,
Delete your torment and sadness,
Expunge your hate and fears."
"And there is no price," he said to me
"You get the perfect deal,
I get your depth and darkness
And no more turmoil you will feel,
I get to fuel my fire
You get to lighten your load
Together we share the benefit
With not a penny owed."
I thought about this offer,
To live so burden free
The Devil was a kind young man
To give a better life to me,
He'd give me back my freedom
So only happiness would remain,
What bliss to have no problems
Living life without such pain.
But the Devil intervened right then -
"Life ain't so black and white,
No one's got it easy girl
So don't give up without a fight,
If you never felt the sadness
The happiness wouldn't show,
Without the ache and anguish
No love could ever grow.
If I take away life's troubles
You become an empty shell
If I withdraw life's little challenges
You lose your core as well,
Are you sure that you could live
With no emotion in your heart?
There's nothing to drive you forward
When heart and soul are pulled apart."
So then I reconsidered,
Sometimes woe is good
Melancholy is a part of life
And now I understood,
It's all about the ups and downs
That's what makes us whole
So I politely refused the Devil's deal
And now I'll never sell my soul.
