HELD HOSTAGE BY MY PAST

the image looking back at me
inside the mirror lies
my face sometimes can masquerade
but never will my eyes
my fingers must be pulled away
to things i once held fast
i will not let my future
be held hostage by my past
each day's a costume party
but the celebration's fraught
with not a scrap of relevance
a tale, no longer bought
this clothing, once so comfortable
just wasn't made to last
i will not let my future
be held hostage by my past
the lines, once flowing, now a farce
my role, a rolling stone
the script i'm holding in my hand
no longer is my own
its time to start another play
this time with different cast
i will not let my future
be held hostage by my past
no longer must i lie asleep
its time to grasp my dreams
and shake off all those fitful nights
awakening to screams
old nightmares must be swept away
they left me quite aghast
i will not let my future
be held hostage by my past
adrift out on the ocean
in the waves, severely tossed
its time to use the stars
to find the navigation, lost
the old sails are worn ragged
like they're ghosts nailed to the mast
i will not let my future
be held hostage by my past
