RINGS UPON THE WATER

we bought a pair of matching rings

both silvery and black

so often circles curve apart

then there's no turning back

rings upon the water

rings descending to the deep

as far as they have ever been

eternally asleep

we didn't always wear our rings

but kept them safe nearby

but fledglings need to free themselves

we finally let them fly

rings upon the water

unattached to any hand

they used to grace our fingers

now they grace a bed of sand

we stood on piers on different coasts

and waited for a sign

yours merged with the atlantic

the pacific claiming mine

rings upon the water

rings that made a tiny plunk

a tribute to a love gone dead

a future that was sunk
