We lay on the grass,
Yellowed with summer, jaundiced, we
Watched the polished hearse
Of winter slide in silently.
Katharine: This is just to say-
Elizabeth: Don't say it.
I can't reply in kind.
In the next silent country
I had thought it might be different
But you wanted me to be
Away from you, indifferent.
Elizabeth: Do you love me?
Katharine: I always-
Elizabeth: Do you love me, Nick?
I kept my eyes blank,
And carefully plotted it out.
My innocence sank
Beyond my necessary doubt.
Katharine: This is just to say-
Elizabeth: Don't.
I only waited
Burning in my emotion, in
My violence, sated
Only by love, my second skin.
Katharine: I don't love you.
Elizabeth: I know.
