The Fog

Lorries lurch into view
like lumbering elephants
through the fog.
Sky
fields
fences
close in around dusty
brake lights
in that moment before fainting
when the world is blank.
As we snaked
fumeless cars
huddled
through a half remembered trail
trusting the road not to
toss us aside
like litter or
reject us like a limb.
I thought of the hitcher
I had passed in Leek.
high on the bank
teetering
drenched in beige
and a soft hat.
Evaporated now,
leaving only a thumbprint
on the mist.

Nice image.
"...high on the bank teetering drenched in beige
and a soft hat..."
A Gloucestershire cheese roller perhaps?
