Arrested

I watched from the balcony formed by a bend in the open stairway at
York station as a young man was lead away by two police officers in
shirtsleeves. He wasn't struggling or looking angry, just walking
slowly under my viewpoint. His shaven head was bowed and his hands were
deep in his pockets. It's a posture I think I've seen before in people
under arrest - they seem simply broken down and resigned to what is
happening to them. There is none of the romantic, dramatic fire that
one sees in crime shows on TV; there is just this spiritless calm that
is somehow more painful to watch. Utter despair it seems; no hope. One
must wonder what has driven him to his crime, and what punishment he
will receive.
