A LONG TIME AGO
A long time ago, such a long time ago.
How many years? I'm damned if I know.
Crow's feet, worry lines, grey hairs galore
She's had two children - I've even more!
Thousands of miles have kept us apart
Though letters, now e-mails tell what's in our hearts
A long time ago, such a long time ago
How many years? I'm damned if I know.
We met in a park, at a pre-destined time
Both very nervous we'd not recognise
The other, because we'd inevitably changed
Both late, we pretty much met at the gate
We smiled, said 'Hello' and then it was fine
A long time ago, such a very long time
We sat in the sun and drank lots of wine
Hours flew past like the years of our prime
Old friends, old enemies - all had their turn
Photos and memories - eager to learn
A long time ago, such a long time ago
How many years? I'm damned if I know
Decades of experience, in just one day
Strange how the time just melted away
Too soon it was over, back to our lives
But the joy of our meeting for long will survive
A long time ago, such a long time ago,
We smiled, said 'Good-bye', then we had to go
