Christmas eve was here at last. Alan &; Mark had been waiting for
this night for a long, long time.
"Come on you two, its bedtime" said their Mum "Santa will have been by
the time you get up in the morning".
Alan &; Mark wanted so badly to wait up and catch Santa bringing
their presents, but off they went to bed.
The two boys were too excited to sleep, so they had a game of I-spy,
then they played with the cars from under the bed.
They got tired of playing but try as they might they could not go to
sleep. They held their eyes tight shut hoping that would work, they
even took turns in counting sheep but nothing sent them to sleep.
Suddenly there was a noise from outside their window, they heard a
scraping noise. Alan stood on the end of his bed and peered through a
gap in the curtains; all he could see was the street light shining in
on him. Mark bounced up and down on his bed, he kept asking what the
noise was but Alan told him to be quiet.
The noise got louder and louder then it stopped and everything was
silent again. The two boys looked at each other and giggled. "Do you
think its Santa?" whispered Mark. Alan shrugged his shoulders, "I don't
know, do I?" he said.
The two young children listened at the window, they held back the
curtain so that they might be able to see what was making the noise. No
one was about; even the birds that sat in the tree were silent.
Mark &; Alan were beginning to feel scared. They both wanted to
shout their Mum &; Dad but they thought Santa would hear them so
they stayed watching out of the window.
While Mark stayed listening at the window, Alan jumped up and let out a
screech, "Its him, its him, hes brought our presents, I just saw his
coat", Mark said "I told you we had been good".
Mark tried to open the window but their Dad had fitted locks on them,
so the boys had to make do with their noses pressed up against cold
glass.
Alan tapped on the window. The man he had seen was walking about on
their roof; he did not here the tapping of the children.
"I can't see Rudolph" Mark whispered to his brother.
"I can't see any reindeer at all" said Alan, "maybe he left them on the
ground".
"Yeah", agreed Mark.
The man didn't seem to have a bag of toys with him either, but that
didn't worry the boys. He had probably put them down the chimney
already.
A tap-tap-tappity-tap sound had started now, what could santa be doing
the boys wondered.
Alan decided that he had better go get his dad, just incase Santa was
in trouble and needed help.
Mark said "I'm staying here, Santa might come in".
Alan scowled at Mark, "Don't be silly the windows are locked, he can't
get in"
Mark looked at Alan as if he had his head on backwards, "you are silly
Alan, everyone knows Santa is magic, he can get in anywhere".
Alan went out on the landing and called for his Mum &; dad. They
came to the foot of the stairs and looked up at Alan. "Whats the
matter, sweetheart?" asked his Mum kindly
"There is somebody on the roof, and hes knocking to come in" said Alan
quietly.
"I bet you are just fed up of waiting for santa and your hearing
things", go back to bed and try to go to sleep.
"No Dad, there really is someone on the roof I saw him"
"Oh" said Mum.
Dad went upstairs and took Alan back in to his bedroom, Mum followed
close behind.
Mark was still stood with his face against the glass.
"Dad, the man is taking the metal off our chimney" Mark
exclaimed.
"What" said Mum &; Dad almost together, "we'd better go check" said
dad
Mum put the boys back in to bed and kissed them goodnight. "Its ok,
your Dad will see to it, now go to sleep you rascals or Santa wont come
if he knows you are a wake".
Mum went out of the bedroom and closed the door, "see you in the
morning" she called.
Dad was waiting for her on the landing, they both looked at each other
and burst in to a fit of giggles.
They tried to get down stairs before the giggles turned in to very loud
laughter.
Outside the man in the red boiler suit had nearly finished putting up
their new aerial.
Just one more nail to tap in and he would be home with his family for
xmas.
Upstairs in the boys bedroom, all was quiet apart from the gentle
breathing of the two little boys.
Downstairs Mum &; dad were sat side by side watching the film that
they had promised to themselves all week. Yesterday when the aerial got
blown down, they thought they would have missed it, but old George had
come to the rescue.
