Tears on a Train

I didn't need your tears
A chilly self-absorption
Had banked on forty winks
Stalling my exhaustion.
Over an empty aisle
I'd caught your eye
And marked out for a judge
I popped down the blinds.
Demeanour of a snob
My dim embarrassment
Sketched out in your sobs
The last night's events.
Some dullard of a boyfriend
Trashy ne'r-do-well
A fraught little bust-up
In a council flat hell.
A new day of heartbreak
On the way back from Brum
To tea and sympathy
From a beleagured mum.
You got off at Loughborough
Could you smell my relief?
Isolation returned
No need to move seats.
For the clutter of strangers
Leaves my soul unstirred
The last thing on my mind
To ask how you were.
