The Green Room

You are waiting in the green room,
for the main show to begin.
You have your lines and your rendition.
But you’re fighting doubt within.
Will these people understand you?
Will they appreciate the show?
Are you outside their expectations?
How will they let you know?
Will they throw rotten eggs?
Or start a slow hand clap?
If they’re really disapproving,
might they simply turn their backs?
For indifference and rejection,
is a burden hard to bear.
When you’ve worked so hard for ages,
To be ignored seems far from fair.
But to expect a warm reception
may be foolish and naive.
If you’re seeking recognition,
in yourself you must believe.
For accolades and roses
may rain upon your head,
But they will count for nothing,
if you nurse your fears instead.
As you step into the spotlight,
let the shadows fall behind.
You have done your preparation.
Let your confidence unwind.
