Body-Building Begins!

Chew! chew! chew!
so that wonderful spit
assembled in mouth glands
with enzymes that split
some starch to begin
the work of transforming our food
(well-chewed by our teeth and ground)
(to continue all along the digestive tract  –
much to learn about that too, in fact)
into blocks we absorb, send around
our body through arteries, veins, in the blood
for all sorts of building of tissues and cells
and fuel to power our thoughts and feet
– all from the food that we eat!

And when you smell a favourite meat
nerves from the brain makes the mouth glands know
to increase the moistening, digesting flow
of saliva spit!
