Surprising Parable

[Continuing the hymn-for-Sundays series] 

Mathew 20:1-16

Some men were hired, worked all day
but first they had agreed their pay;
then some hired later, then at last
a few when most of the day had passed.
    The master paid the wages out
    and all received the same amount!

The first group grumbled – ‘We worked long’
– they had been paid as agreed upon.
Angry that those who worked less time
surprisingly were paid the same.
    Aggrieved at generosity –
    a master moved with love and pity.

So that is how the story goes
– but was it fair and right for those
who’d worked long hours – the story taught
the gifts God gives aren’t earned or bought
    –  graciously He gives lavishly
    – we seek to serve Him thoughtfully.       Tune: 88 88 88
