Off To Ontario
Packed it in
no more jobs here
he told himself these
past few years
forgetting his children
enjoyed feeding
their pigs chasing
neighbour’s cows or
crossing plowed fields
red mud squishing
between toes
barefoot in the sun
his wife watching their
Scotch Pine fence
thrusting into Nova Scotia
sky seeing her children
happy giving her pride.
What about his own joy
watching a family
of deer rabbits playing
in the moonlight?
Their dwelling among
the woods acres
of forest silence
escaping civilized activity.
Old memories placed
on a shelf create urges to
return one day
Yes they’ve left our soil
and headed west for
other gain but I’m sure
they’ll come home again.
