SUMMER MEMORIES

"I Remember
Summer days being clothed in sun's warm embrace
Caressing my body, my soul encased
By sun's radiant beauty and exquisite grace
And sun's tender fingers stroking my face
The sensation of cane crushed under my feet
The fragrance of spices so hot, so sweet
My senses alive in sun's burnished glow
The hum of the bees, so gentle, so low
The shimmer of moon on oceans of sapphire
The lullaby of crickets, a comforting choir
The songs of my people so warm and content
My mind, like the sea, a copious torrent
With youthful vigour making my plans
For a satisfying life in my homeland"
She flinches: it seems that now she's aware
That the chill of old age is now in the air
Autumn overtook the sun-filled days
Soon the sun was sheathed by a wintry haze
"The songs of my people are now subdued
My palate unresponsive to flavoursome food"
Her once vibrant body is in constant lament
For those blithe days of summer - now truly spent
"Please don't despise my hair's silver tone
My life is not over, don't leave me alone
My body may sit exhausted, forlorn
But Memory remains
It has weathered the storm
Now Memory as my one loyal friend
Will recreate summer until my life's end"
