Parejo

Sucking on a fat, parejo, 'Romeo Y Julietta' cigar,
Plush, cracked, brown leather engulfing every movement.
Audibly; swollen, stained fingers, roughly carress
the cut glass tumbler.
Port grows warmer,
The paper sticks to the fat bottom lip
As the butt grows thick with spit
That drips and nestles in the unkempt beard.
The fire licks the bricks
And the heady atmosphere sticks
To the roof of the mouth.
Drink up, bottoms up, up, up, up.
Not far to fall, from toast
and hopeful eyes turn hopeless minds
to far off worlds, where turning tides
make beguiled men feel like sailors of the storm.
Sucking on a fat, parejo, 'Romeo Y Julietta' cigar,
Eyes fall heavy,
The night was ready to engulf you in its heart.
The fire slowly flickers to a death.

I remember seeing a box of these cigars once with a picture on the front! I like the poem, it's evocative of warmth and foreign parts Elsie

My partner smokes cigars and has a beard, so I could kind of relate to this poem. Some great visuals in this read and cleverly put together. Jenny.
