Childrens' playground poetry

Sonnets are for cissies
And poems are for wimps
The entire playground agrees with me
On this we won't budge an inch
If you want to proclaim playground love
Don't even mention the word romance
And as for reciting Shakespeare's Sonnets
I'm telling you - you won't stand a chance
Poems should remain in classrooms
Next to maths books - where they belong
In this playground, admitting a love for poetry
Will ensure that you don't last long
Poems have no place here
Amongst the rhythm of playground life
The nearest we come are football chants
Oh- and rhyming taunts are rife
Just trust me on this one
Keep your poetry quietly to yourself
Poems have no place in schools
Other than books on the reading shelf
You'll find no poetry in our playground
We're too hard for such pastimes
You'll never hear poems from these kids
And this? It's not a poem, just a warning that rhymes.
