                              …a conversation overheard in passing…

‘Mum, can I have some of that cake?’ the boy asks, pointing to a wafer thin slice of sponge. 

‘Same for me mum?’ the young girl pleads.

‘Away with the both of you’  she replies.  

‘At that price… I’ll bake whatever you want when we get home.

She smiles as they skip off, shopping bags slung over their shoulders.

A cafe poster touts soup of the day.

One slice of bread and butter or bread stick, extra.

At the hostel, free broth and bread 24/7.

Seated at the long table lumps of bread are torn and shared.

Dipping into deep bowls of welcoming broth filled with empathy and happiness,

they banter and chatter above the clatter of spoons.

‘Hey…where’s my pudding’  chuckles one.

Spoons hitting hands and knees tap out the tune.

‘Give us a song first’  

Somewhere, two children crossing spoons, compete to scrape a bowl clean of cake mix. 

The Pop Up bakery shop covers over stale cakes for another day.

A cafe shuts early, sliced bread wilts in the window, a bread stick lies broken.

In the hostel, new found friends make plans for another meet up.

In unison they chant a pudding song to loud applause.
