Heartache
Chapter 1.
The woman sat down at her desk. She picked up her old pencil and a
yellow piece of paper. She sat in her favorite chair, which was an old
lawn chair that had lots of holes in it. It was her "thinking chair."
She looked around her room at all the pictures of her kids on the wall.
Stopping ever so often to stare at one. Trying to get an idea, yet none
came to her. She sucked on the tip of her pencil and scribbled
something down.
"The lucky rabbit.."
It was a start. but it wasn't enough. So she got up and looked around
the room. She walked over to a picture, picked it up and shed a tear.
It was of her late husband. She loved that man very much. He was the
one to teach her to write stories. She sat in her chair again, still
holding the picture. "Bill.I miss you. I can't write anymore.. Not
without you."
She lost her husband only two months ago in a car accident. The old
woman didn't know what to do without him. She tried to get back to her
normal life. Everyday she would come home from shopping and sit in her
chair. Bill would sit next to her and she would write some of the best
stories you had ever seen. She never published any, but she wrote them
just the same.
"I can't." She set down her pencil, and paper, and looked out the
window. `What am I going to do?' She walked out on the porch and let
the breeze ruffle her hair. She smelled the sweet scent of flowers in
the air. `Bill loved nights like this..' She shook her head. "I don't
think I can get over this any time soon..' She walked back into her
house and lay on the bed. She curled up in a ball and cried herself to
sleep.
In her dreams she saw her husband. His black hair tinted silver, blew
in an invisible wind. His once crystal green eyes had a faded look to
them. His tan skin remained the same and his once chubby figure had
lost a few pounds. He spoke to her in a mystic yet kind voice. "Margie,
don't give up. Writing is your world. You still have me.. just look
inside your heart." Then her dreams faded into another.
Of the accident.. her and Bill inside the car going down the road.
Bill had dropped something and reached down to pick it up. Margie had
noticed they were going to the other side of the road but was too
late.. another car was already smashing into their car by the time she
had gotten to the wheel. She was thrown out of the car a few
feet.
Bill was caught between his seat and the dash. Margie was knocked
unconscious with only a cracked rib. Then the images faded into
another. A white room replaced the car scene. Margie looked around and
saw herself in a gown of some sorts. She rubbed her head and sat
up.
A lady dressed as a nurse walked into the room and dropped what she was
holding and ran back out. Margie was confused and didn't know where she
was. She tried to get up but the pain in her ribs made her lay back
down. A doctor walked in and sat beside her.
"Ma'am.I got good news and bad news. You only have a minor concussion
and a cracked rib... But I'm afraid...the man you were with didn't make
it..He got smashed...we're truly sorry.." The doctor did a few tests
and walked out the room.
Margie awoke to the sound of thunder. She rubbed her eyes and looked at
the clock. "Midnight." She got out of bed and walked to the kitchen.
"What a day.." She got a glass and poured some water in it. She sat
down at the table and stared off into space. It was a few minutes later
that she noticed she hadn't drunk any of her water and took a few
drinks. She then poured the rest out in the sink and walked to the
bathroom.
She looked in the mirror. Her golden hair was a mess and looked like it
went through a blender. Her brown eyes had bags under them and her pale
skin looked a little grey. She poured some water into her cupped hands
and splashed her face. "I won't be able to sleep after that dream." She
walked back into her room and got into something more
comfortable.
`I wonder how Richard is doing..' She started to pick up the phone and
realized how late it was. `He's still asleep.' She then thought of her
daughter Nicole. `She stays up late I wonder.' She picked up the phone
and dialed her number. A few rings later and a girl picked up. "Hello?"
Margie sighed and responded.
"Hi Nicole It's me." Nicole gasped a bit and said.
"Mom? What are you doing up so late? Are you sick? Do you need a
doctor?" Margie shook her head at the worry in her daughter's
voice.
"No I'm fine. I just wondered how you were." Nicole didn't believe
her.
"It's Dad isn't it? Oh mom. I'm sorry for not being there more often.
College takes up most of my time. But as soon as this year is over I
will offer to move back in so you won't be alone."
"That's ok Nicole. I'm fine as long as I have someone to talk to. Well
honey it's late I'm gonna see if I can get some sleep."
"Ok bye mom. Have a nice night. Love you."
"Love you too Nicole have fun." Margie hung up the phone and decided to
climb back in bed and try to get some rest. After today she needed
some. (To be continued)
