Dolly's New Home

Dolly stepped upon to the porch. She peered at the door of the cabin.
She noticed it
had a new look to it. She made her way over, and looked through the
window. She
couldn't believe her eyes.

The living room had all new furniture. She ran around to the back, and
retrieved the
extra key Will kept under a flowerpot.

She dashed back, an opened the front door. She hadn't been inside of
the cabin for
over a year.
She was surprised to see how much Will had done to the place. He had
redecorated
in all her favorite colors, soft pastels.

Dolly thought, "He must have won big to do all this"!

Her mind drifter back to last fall when he told her, "he was going to
Ashton to do a
little gambling". He had invited her to go, and next morning had
sneaked off, and
left her. He was gone for 3 days, and they had a huge argument when he
returned.

She remembered accusing him of have a girlfriend. He packed up his
stuff, and left
for over 3 months. She just knew, "he had left her for some old
hussy"!

When he returned he told her, "Dolly everything I have done was meant
for you".
She had replied by saying, "and what may that have been"?

Will had told her, "one of these days you will find out"! She thought,
"Will was
never one to say he loved me". He always just wanted to shower me with
things!
Dolly thought Will, "Why couldn't you, just one time say those 3 little
words"? But
deep down in her heart, "she didn't think he ever did love her"!

She to knew Bess! "They grew up together"! When her maw married Will's
pa;
both of the Reed boy's went wild over her.

But Bess was in love with Jim Potter, "he had been her childhood
sweetheart". She
thought of the Reeds, "as just what they were brother's"!

Sal, accepted it a lot better than Will did.

"I guess deep down I was jealous of Bess" Dolly, said aloud. I wanted
Will to look
at me the way he did her, and most of all to love me!

It almost broke Bess's heart when Sal went to war; she always wrote
him, and sent
him pictures. Will always said, "They had an affair"! That's why Angel
was never
told about them being her half uncles.

She mumbled, "If they did I was never aware of it". But, yet poor Will
was always
assuming something.

She thought, "Besides J. P. that was his nickname, never liked the Reed
boys".
Dolly figured, "he didn't want his little girl around them".

Sal would make an effort to go up that way, and check on her once a
year after she
lost her parents. He would always tell me, "He felt sorry for
her"!

But he wouldn't tell her, "He was her uncle". I never did understand
why! Sal was a
private person, and I never pried into his business. The only reason he
left her all
that stuff was because he felt sorry for her.

"O! No the house! What are you going to do Dolly Reed with that big
house"? I
know exactly what I'm going to do! I am going to give it to the person
who owns
it", she said aloud.

Besides, she thought, "I have a new home right here"! She started to go
into the
bedroom, but decided to go back to the other house. I have a husband to
bury, and
wonderful people waiting there for my return. Dolly muttered, "I would
love to be
part of their family"! She wondered if they would want her around after
they
learned the truth.

Dolly said aloud, "that's the chance I'll have to take", and she walked
out the door.
