Janice put her hand over his eyes and then Jim slowly woke up.
-It's been a long time.
-You still look the same.
His sister was like a saint to him. She had written every three days to him while he was lost in time. She was always encouraging him when he felt down and alone, in the gutters of reality. He literally had no one else. He had never gotten married. He had never found the one. His sister always looked after him.
-You shouldn't drink so much.
-It passes the time.
They both got in the old, beat up Chevy and she started to drive. Janice was a good driver who made Jim feel very secure. He began to think again about the money. What had he done with the $100,000 he had stolen? This had been a big issue in the court. How much had he stolen and where was the money? No one really knew. The young man he had murdered had a very wealthy father, a billionaire some said. The young man kept money in suitcases in his room. They had accused Jim of stealing one of the suitcases. Jim had totally blacked out after the murder. He had no memory of what he had done with the suitcase. After 30 years, he was not even sure that he had stolen the money. The court could not prove anything. Jim never went on a spending spree, buying everything up in the town. There was no proof of anything except a missing suitcase that could hold hundreds of thousands of dollars in $100 bills. Based on that one fact, they had found him guilty of murder and of grand theft, a first-degree felony.
-How long is it going to take to get to your home?
-20 minutes.
Had he done something so wrong? That young man... he couldn't even remember his name. Maybe he didn't want to remember his name. That young man was just a drug dealer and a master of a prostitution ring. He spoke a language that I could not understand. A young white man pretending to be a black, drug kingpin. Why did he have to do that? His father was richer than God from what he understood. He didn't need to deal drugs and prostitutes. Why did he do what he did? And he was so horrible to people. Just plain terrible. Then my sister started going out with him and I just about hit the wall. Why was she doing that? Then he started to beat her like a bitch. Her body was bruised all the time and she started to change into this scared little thing, almost like an animal.
