they

they came after the Korean War...
they only wanted the pretty ones
who entertained them...
women were desperate for survival
they married the Americans...
we were told that they were living the dream
but it was not so
after the initial act of heroism, the marriages
became violent and abusive.
we were so poor and so humble
trying to work our way up,
the Americans saw us as a manufacteuring plant
with no way out,
we worked and worked and worked, then
some of us began to cheat, lie, steal
to gain more money than others.
we went to America for job opportunities...
America was like Babylon
wanting the best from other countries
and renewing themselves through them...
I found America rather cultureless and boring
and fell asleep on the beach
listening to rock and roll
and smoking grass.
culture is a home and there is no home in America...
homeless people migrating from one section to another
looking for the light fantastic and the fast fix,
get rich quick schemes to screw over friends and enemies...
I looked for America in the songs of Simon and Garfunkel
and found only
stone simplicities winding in the wind.
I went back to South Korea
started a laundromat
and began to build
a life.

Sad and compelling. I love,
Sad and compelling. I love, 'culture is a home'.
