The Worm in a Red Sock

Down a small hole
And under a rock
Lived a little brown worm
That wore a red sock.
Not a hat, nor a glove,
Not a suit, nor a shirt,
But with only one sock
He lived in the dirt.
It’s funny to say this
But I know that it’s true,
Worms don’t wear socks,
Whether red or blue!
He laughed and he sang,
He danced and he played
While wearing that sock
So red that he’d made.
He slept in the day,
The sock kept him warm.
At night he awoke
And stayed out until dawn.
You may already know this
But I’ll tell you again,
Worms don’t sing or dance
Or even entertain!
Then one night it happened,
When out for a walk,
He found a yellow shoe.
It was one that could talk!
“Hello, Mr. Shoe,”
Said the worm with a smile.
“May I try you on please?
Just for a little while.”
Sorry to say this
But it’s really absurd
To think a shoe could talk
Or even say a single word!
So the shoe did agree
And although not too sure,
He soon came to realise
He couldn’t wish for more!
You see he fitted nicely
Over that sock so red.
Out the hole they climbed.
On the grass they did tread.
Please don’t tell me
That you believe this stuff!
A worm in a sock was good
But the shoe just makes me laugh!
They went to the fishpond
And they looked this way and that
And down in the water
They saw a fish with a hat.
“Hello, Miss Fish,”
Said the shoe with a laugh,
“That does look rather funny,
Wearing a hat in the bath!”
Now this is getting silly,
No really, it is a bit!
Fish do not wear hats!
No, they just would not fit!
“Don’t you laugh at me!”
The offended fish said.
“Just look at you!
There’s a worm with a sock in your head!”
“Now, now,” said the worm,
Trying to keep things cool,
“No need to fight
With the fish in the pool.”
Excuse me for lying
If what I say is not true,
But there has never been a fish
That fought with a shoe!
The shoe took note
Of what the worm was saying,
When the fish turned and said
That she was only playing.
And they became close friends,
As did the worm and the shoe,
So now we have three friends
Instead of just two.
That’s all I can take!
I won’t stay behind
For this story is bonkers,
It’s confusing my mind!
First there’s a worm
That wears a red sock,
Then there’s a shoe
That clearly talks a lot!
Then there’s a fish
That’s wearing a hat
And to top it all off,
They become friends after that!
