Monolithic (Ch 2)

Minx woke up feeling groggy and slightly lightheaded. The rundown apartment was replaced with a time-appropriate, decorated motel room. Outdated, green, floral pattern for wallpaper and a matching darker green rug. A great improvement from where she came from. The smell was pleasant as a motel room could be. The room felt clean and fresh, the type of fresh where she felt safe to take off her shoes.
She looked down to the floor beside her and found that same duffel bag. She got up and began to shuffle through the bag. Inside she found a brick of a cell phone, a polaroid camera, some spare clothes, toiletries, and an envelope. Inside the envelope was about $500 in cash, carefully procured to make sure the bills were from the 80s and previous years. It was a long process to find said bills, a lot of visits to Ebay and the bank. Her wallet contained a forged ID, changing her birth year from 1996 to 1960. Sam knew a guy who made his living creating fake IDs, all it took was Sam’s dad’s ID from the time period.
Minx reached over for the phone on the nightstand and began to dial the number for the service desk.
A man’s voice was heard, “Thank you for calling the Hotspot motel, this is Fred speaking, how may I help you?”
“Hi, yes this is Kim from room 8B. I have a silly question for you. What is today’s date?”
“Yes ma’am, it’s December 12th. Is there anything else I could help you with?”
“1985?” Minx asked.
The man hesitated in disbelief, “Yes ma’am. Is there anything I can assist you with?” He repeated.
“No sir, that is all. Thank you so much.”
“You have a great day, ma’am.”
“Thanks, you too!”
She hung up as fast as she could, and went back to the duffel bag. Grabbing the cellphone she immediately dialed Sam. Please pick up, please pick up, please.
“You’ve made it!” A familiar voice cheered on.
“Fuck yeah I did! We did it!” Minx matched the same level of excitement as Sam.
“Is your ticket there?”
Minx grabbed the wallet again and pulled out a ticket out of the bills pocket. There it was, a backstage ticket to see Au Revior Lips. Compared to the shape it was in when they bought it from Ebay, it now looks brand new! “Yep!” Confirmed Minx.
“Great! Don’t forget the time is7:30 for check-in time, it’ll be at the entrance on the east side of the building. The concert starts at 8 and will end around 12.” Sam directed.
“Got it!”
“Listen, you’re trying to get to the afterparty. Do what you have to do but try to keep as much dignity as you can. We’re talking about being the girl next door. At this time Jimmy X is the only married member of the band, but what 80’s rockstar actually commits?”
Minx laughed, “No promises. I got this in the bag. I look fantastic right now, no guy can resist me.”
“You got this. Just be safe alright! Don’t forget to hit the merch table. Get as many sizes as you can. But the real money maker is autographs, used sweat rags, anything you could find. The more personal, the better.” Sam paused for a beat, “Oh yeah! Make sure you take lots of pictures, we need this shit to be authentic.”
“Over and out rainbow trout. I have everything accounted for.” Minx confirmed.
“Okay, everything is going according to plan. Just don’t get your ass arrested, I can’t wire you out. Don’t die! Like A Nightmare on Elm Street, you die in the universe, you die in OUR universe too.” Sam said sternly. “I’ll let you go. Just remember, 7:30!”
Minx rolled her eyes, “Alright, alright. I hear ya! I’ll talk to you soon.”
“Goodbye, have a fun time!”
“Goodbye, you have fun doing whatever you’re doing.” Minx said sarcastically.
“Fuck you.” Sam hung up.
Minx checked the time, 4:30. What to do, what to do? No modern day cell phone, just in case it got into the wrong hands. She made her way to the television to switch it on. It was built into a cabinet. The box had “bunny ears” for an antenna. The television had knobs to adjust the color setting and to change the channel. It was clunky, and looked like it would have weighed at least 200 pounds altogether.
Knight Rider was on, a show that her father had made her watch when she was young. She was always fascinated by K.I.T.T. She’d never imagine that she’d have her own sci-fi adventures. If they hadn’t committed so many crimes to get to this point, they would’ve made a scientific breakthrough. Perhaps won an award, national recognition. Instead, they kept this idea to themselves for selfish reasons…
Minx shook off the thought and began to relish in the nostalgia of the show
