Violins (Saying Goodbye)
Another day that did not want to end. He could hear the violins from
the minute he woke up and they were doing nothing for his sanity. They
did not leave him in peace for a moment anymore. There had been a
period when he had a little time to himself, some space, a place to go
where he could hide, or be someone else, or do whatever he wanted to
do. Now he had no time at all. As soon as he got up in the morning, the
violins started to play, and most days they would not stop until he
finally, blissfully went to sleep.
Not that he did not like the violins. On the contrary, he used to be
very fond of them, in fact he was looking for them at one point, wanted
them to play, entertain him, and loved the way they played just for
him. That was a long time ago. He still liked them very much, but
sometimes, just occasionally he longed for the peace and quiet that
once he had. Not even in his secret hiding place was he safe anymore,
the violins had searched him out, found the place where he used to go
when he wanted to be alone, and now they were tormenting him there as
well.
He put his hands over his ears in a feeble attempt to shut them out.
It made no difference, he could still hear them loud and clear in his
head as before. Those wonderful violins he used to love, playing such
evocative music that he was now beginning to hate. He wished it was
different. He wished that he still loved the music they played, that he
would be able to listen to their soothing sounds and just enjoy, but he
could not.
He spun around and reached for the violins. In a fit of temper he
grabbed them and smashed them to pieces. There. Peace at last. He
sighed. It was nice. It was quiet.
It didn't matter how much he wished for the violins to return and play
for him, they never did. He was alone.
