I'd have a lovely day at work. It was Summer and was just walking slow and was almost home, I was soaking in the the glorious hot sun. I felt at peace and was looking forward to the weekend tomorrow, with all the things we had planned to do.
I could see a young girl, coming towards me a lovely girl, who goes to the same school as my children, as she came nearer to me, I thought she was going to pass me, but she didn't she looked troubled and said to me in a shaking voice, “Are you Daniels Mum?” I said “Yes” she said, “I've just seen what happened, as I past the chip shop, I saw him fall, and he has hit is head on the steps, it's split open!!” My heart leapt in my mouth, because I know the two steps to the chip shop they are concrete and I replied, “When did this happen, is he hurt, is he bleeding???” She said, “It has just happened, you need to hurry!” I thanked her and hurried on ahead! Many thoughts raced through my mind, did my Husband know, was Daniel conscious, had anyone rang for an ambulance???
I past the chip shop, there was no blood on the steps, I rushed on home, busting in I asked if Daniel was OK, he was there and and seemed OK. Husband and Daniel asked me what was the matter, I explained about the girl I'd just met and she told me Daniel has fallen and cut his head open on the chip shop steps.
Daniel asked me to describe her to him, in fact I know where she lives and I said its the girl that goes to the same school as you and Amy, she lives at the house on the corner of our road. Daniel said, “It's Karuni, she always tell lies” I was shocked, hurt, all my peace had gone! How could she have been so cruel.
I didn't (thankfully) see her often, and for about the next year or so I totally ignored her whenever I saw her, I wished bad things for her and for someone in the future to frighten her as much as she had me, I disliked her a lot! But, I'm the adult and kids will be kids, I suppose, I gradually thought it was wrong of me to ignore her so the next time I saw her, I smiled at her, she didn't expect it and quickly smiled back. Then eventually we would say “Hi” as we past in the street.
One day when she thought she had gained my confidence again, she said, “Can I tell you a secret?” I knew whatever she told me I wasn't going to believe, she said, “Your Daniel smokes, I have seen him and his friends,” She went on, “Don't tell him it was me who told you” I reassured her I wouldn't.
I didn't believe her.
But it turned out to be true.
