Approaching Sundown

Every morning Mr. Simpson walked the five blocks from his
house to the bank, around their parking lot and back home again, before
eating his Raisin Bran, toast, and prunes. His family oft times
tried to move him to a retirement home or into their own homes.
He resisted. This was where he and Elsie had resided for 40 years,
raised a family, and made it into a home. Elsie had become ill
and died three years earlier. Mr. Simpson's only
weekly activities were daily walks and several hours of television
viewing daily. He no longer drove, but instead took a weekly shopping
jaunt with a local seniors
group.
Simp's grandchildren oft
times complained that gramps forgot to cut off the stove, or had
forgotten that Sunday had arrived, when they went to take him to
church. He was physically fit but couldn't distinguish between
reality and a television program he'd recently viewed. A few days
following a shoot-out on television, Simp thought it really happened.
Some call this senility or old age, but Simp was just involved in what
he saw.
This day, as Simp
walked by the bank, a tall blond carrying a shotgun at her side and a
burlap bag in the other hand(To put the bank's money in, no doubt.)
emerged from her car and was joined by a tall man with a skinny nosed
fat pistol. Quickly
Simp ran next door and told the T.V.
repairman : " Call 911. The bank is being
robbed.";
Three police
cars arrive quickly and joined Simp in the parking lot. No Alarm had
sounded at the yet unopened bank. The police knocked and entered
cautiously with drawn weapons.; The crowd of police and gawkers
swelled and waited, until fiinally, the police captain came out and
jestered for Simp to come
inside
.
"Simp,";
the officer drawled. "Do you see the people here that came in
with the weapons?"
Simp
looked over the bank personnel and indicated a blond teller still
holding her umbrella and canvas tote that contained her lunch and
jogging shoes, and one of the loan officers that still held his cell
phone in his hand.
"Heck,
this retirement home ain't half bad," thought Simp. "The meals are regular. There's lots of television
viewing, and we have guards to keep all those bad guys on the
outside, and iIt's good to have the doors locked where they
can't get in"
