Eight Eyes

Eight Eyes
The last time I saw him - him meaning my best friend Ted - was on 11th
May, later found in the gutters of Egypt with his heart missing and
wrapped in web. It was clearly the work of 'Eight Eyes', the most
dreaded and fearsome spider men. That was when they passed the case on
to Josie and I.
Josie is my second best friend and has been since play school. Josie is
fourteen years old, with blonde hair, blue eyes and has a jokey
personality.
We are to fly to Egypt in an hour in a mighty big airship.
We went to get into the car to drive to the airport, but then we saw it
just on the middle left window - scratched into the glass was the
picture of a spider's web. That's when we knew that they were after
us.
When we got to the airport we jumped out of the car and glided over to
the airship. We were quite early and got the best seats, although there
were only ten.
Six hours later we were approaching Spendix airport, but we had another
two hours to go until we landed. All that could be seen was two
pyramids on either side of us, and we were heading straight for the
middle of them. It was then I saw it; it was a sort of glistening,
shiny thing between the two pyramids. Then the thought struck me - it
was a spider's web! It was too late to warn the pilot - we were only a
few hundred yards away.
Josie had spotted it by now as we were both sitting bolt upright by the
window looking out.
All I could hear was the passengers saying, "What is it? Who put it
there?"
I knew who had put it there all right - Eight Eyes - that organisation
of evil.
As the airship glided into the web it was caught and held firmly in its
grip.
From the tops of the pyramids came hundreds of small yellow spiders
crawling across the web. When they reached the airship they started to
gnaw at the side of the cabin. Before long they had chewed a hole in
the side and came flooding in through it.
Everyone was screaming and jumping onto the seats, but Josie and I
stayed calm.
It was Josie's idea to get a fire extinguisher and spray it onto the
spiders. We both grabbed one and started to spray the spiders. In no
time at all we had killed nearly all of them except for three that we
caught, put in a jar for our scientists to examine.
As soon as the airship had drawn to a halt we jumped out, grabbed our
luggage and took a taxi to take us to the hotel.
Once we were at the hotel we went to our separate rooms and started to
unpack. When I had finished I sat on my bed quietly waiting for Josie
to come in.
Suddenly a piercing scream spoiled my silence and I rushed into Josie's
room. She was lying on the floor with her hands tied behind her back
with web. Next to her stood three spider men. Each one was six foot
tall and wearing black and yellow lycra with a yellow mask that covered
their head. In the mask there were eight eyeholes - four on each side -
with flashing black eyes glinting out from behind them.
I pulled out my pistol and shot one of them in the neck. Black blood
spurted everywhere from the gruesome wound. With a gurgle he collapsed
and died instantly.
The other two scrambled out of the window headfirst, slid down his
piece of silk to the ground and disappeared into the blackness of the
alleyway. As soon as they had gone I ran over to Josie and untied the
silk that was around her hands.
Two days later Josie and I went shopping in the Kasbah. The Kasbah is a
busy market filled with beggars, camels, merchants and carpet sellers.
I turned to look at a bag. When I looked back - Josie was gone. Beside
me was a dark alleyway. In it I saw a glint of silver that was probably
Josie's necklace. At once I rushed into the alleyway, drawing my gun.
As I caught up with them I saw that it was Josie, but she had company.
Five spider men were carrying her. One was bigger than the rest - about
eight foot tall. Three of them turned back to attack me.
My first bullet hit the nearest in the chest. Before I could fire again
the other two were upon me. I kicked one in the head and felt the
crunch of bone under my foot. Meanwhile the other one hit me hard on
the jaw. I stumbled backwards and fell over. He pounced on me, but I
rolled to one side and, as he landed on the floor I fired again and put
a bullet through his nose and into his brain.
The spider man that I had kicked in the head got up and launched
himself onto me. With one quick movement I seized his neck and screwed
his head round until I heard a crack and he went limp.
When I looked up I saw the other three spidermen climbing the wall and
Josie lying on the cold stone unconscious.
Josie is very heavy to carry, if you are ever able to try. I lifted her
around the corner and laid her on the ragged pavement. I then ripped
open her shirt (don't worry, she had something else on) to check
whether there was any other damage.
I stared in horror at the, hideous, mark across her tummy. What I was
staring at was a red scar, blood pouring out. It was in the shape
of&;#8230; can you guess?&;#8230; Yes&;#8230; a spiders
web.
We had to get to the hospital fast as she was losing blood all the
time. At the end of the alleyway I could see a quay with a number of
small boats bobbing against it. Picking her up carefully, I staggered
to the nearest boat and lowered her into it. Taking the oars, I cast
off and started to row across the lake to the hospital. Behind me I
could hear the owner of the boat howling at me to give it back.
About half way across the lake I saw three low, thin shapes pull out
from the shore and head straight towards us. I stood up to get a closer
look and soon realised that they were kayaks, two of them containing
yellow figures - one black. It was the three remaining spider men! I
started to row as hard as I could but it was easy for them to catch me
up. As they got near I stopped rowing and pulled my pistol out. I aimed
carefully and shot at his head. Bullseye! I hit it. He toppled over and
fell into the water. I aimed at the figure on his left, and shot, but
nothing came out. I had run out of ammunition. I realised that I was
going to have to take them on single handedly. Well - not exactly - I
still had the oars. As the first one drew alongside I grabbed hold of
the oar and vigorously slammed it at his head. He went head first into
the water with his skull split in two. Meanwhile the last one came up
behind me and launched himself on top of me. I threw him with a Ninja
throw, over the top of my shoulder, got a strangle hold on him and
forced his head under the water in the bottom of the boat until he
stopped breathing.
As he stopped breathing, Josie sighed and sat up. The scar on her
stomach had disappeared. I told Josie what had happened but she
wouldn't believe - and she still doesn't. I don't really know what
happened about the scar myself.
Breathing a sigh of relief, Josie and I took an oar each and rowed away
into the sunset.
