Orange Lizards And Tumblebugs

Have you ever turned over a rotting log and seen brilliant
orange lizards underneath it, or layed on your stomach and watched
tumble bugs roll a ball of crap into their hole, made clover necklaces
that went on forever, or found the biggest green leaves and weaved
patterns in them with small sticks, swung on grapevines, separated
wheat from chaff until you got enough wheat to make a good size wad of
gum.
This is what we did on lazy Sundays before
television and game boys. The only time you came inside the house was
for meals, and darkness. There was absolutely nothing to do and not
nearly enough time to do it in. We would find a place under a shade
tree sweep it clean and play jacks,if you were lucky you had pick-up
sticks the kind that came in a can.We stayed as far away from our house
as we could get.
These days you can't get a kid out
of the house some of them are still there when their forty. I think our
parents were right about a lot of things,if we hung around they would
find a job for us to do.We need to make these ingrates that were
raising get off their butts and help us take the garbage out, not for
an allowance but because their part of the family. Do their own laundry
and clean up after themselves they might leave home a lot sooner.
Instead we wait on them hand and foot try to give them everything that
we never had and ruin them in the process.
If I
had it to do over again I would quit worring about giving them the
things I never had. I would concentrate on the things that they should
have, try and teach them to be happy with what they do have,go after
what they want, and understand that the world owes them nothing. Above
all else to treat their own children these little sponges with the
greatest respect. They will thank you one day. I guarantee it.
