Idea: Genetically engineered CO2 reducing plants to suck up greenhouse gas

Why don't genetic engineers who are, at present making disease resistant crops, instead create giant CO2 consuming superplants that will breath in lots of CO2 from the earths atmosphere and convert it into oxygen.
