Why Do We Have To Get Old...When We’re Old?

Why do we have to get old when we’re old?
I could have got old while I was still young
I would have coped with it much better then
But it’s hard for women as well as for men
When I was in my prime and much younger
I was not weak, like now, I was stronger
And I could fight any disease with ease
Please, why is it we get old when we’re old?

Now I catch things I can’t throw away
If it’s a cold then it is here to stay
And rheumatism too is not unknown
And a wee can mean an hour on the throne.
So, why leave it till we’re old to get old?

I used to be active, quick moving, strong
Now if I move quick something goes wrong
I’ve tablets for this and tablets for that
I feel like throwing the lot in a hat
Closing my eyes before taking my pick
Now my head’s pounding so I best be quick
But why is it we get old when we’re old?

When I was young I was quite a looker
Now I look like an out of work hooker
My white skin was smooth like alabaster
Now it should be covered with a plaster!
Now, why is it we get old when we’re old?

Something I’ve noticed about getting old
I used to be brave but now not so bold
I’m much too frightened to go out at night
Because some kids gave me an awful fright!
Yes, why is it we only get old when we’re old?

Oh, there’s one more thing I’d like to mention
Try living off a pensioner’s state pension
In the end, you have a choice...do you eat?
Or, do you stay warm and stop eating meat?
It’s not fair that we get old when we’re old

Now you know this, consider yourself told
So you can be the first to break the mould
Don’t wait to get old and confined to bed
Get old while you’re young and strong instead
So, please, don’t wait till you’re old to get old!
