RUMOURS & LIES & STORIES THEY MADE UP.

Awaken my sweet, for a fresh day is dawning
And the larks they do herald a new Tear Gas morning
Walk with me true love, come take my hand
And let us go a roving through our Wonderland,
Where the children they frolic on the green grassy knoll
Beneath the halogen lamps of the Noon Street patrol.
Hush now my sweet, say not one word
For our thoughts we don’t want them to be overheard
By the prying ears of near neighbor Jim
Who’d sell his own soul just to turn us both in.
Or the little ones singing that old nursery rhyme
Come, put down your toys, it’s brainwashing time
Prick up your ears and pick up your pens
And let’s play a game of Who, Why & When.
It’s oh so much fun, this catch as catch can
Let’s send Mummy & Daddy to the Party Man
They all look so pretty in their trousers and skirts
With shiny gold buttons upon their green shirts.
Their freshly scrubbed faces and dark searching eyes
That see no distinction between the truth and the lies
Blinded with snowstorms, programmed by hate
There’s something bad lurking behind that park gate.
Where people from bad homes are turned over like tricks
And faces grow weary from kissing the bricks
With cameras and pictures and snaps to remember
While we struggle to tell if it’s May or December.
Your birthday, our wedding, the names of our kids
That diary you brought me, I’d best keep it hid
From the all seeing eye that hangs from the wall,
And barks out instructions that force us to crawl.
Down alleys and backstreets, through bomb blacked out gloom
To the shop on the corner with the small attic room
Where we lie in the darkness, caressing in fright
While the snakes and the vultures prowl on through the night.
The sticks and the stones may soon break our bones
But it’s the names that will finally hurt us
For they’ll call us this, and they’ll call us that
While our memories pack up and desert us.
Until we scream out aloud we can’t take anymore
And two nailed to two no longer makes four
Before we forget all our promises, those dreams yesterday
In the rush to confess and the need to betray.
I still love you now as I once loved you then
As the bell rings out thirteen from the chimes of Big Ben
So goodbye my love, as you leave without warning
And I step out once more to a bright Tear Gas morning.
