Big Girl

The boys stare up at the scaffolding and make plans about how to climb it. I watch Otis as he talks. He’s the tallest and the best looking. He’s fifteen and I’m ten, but one day, I’d like to marry him.
My cousin shushes everyone, looking at me. He says: Go home, Kyla. I stick my tongue out at him and tell him I’ll rat him out if he tries to send me away.
Otis spots, takes and places a plank of wood against a railing. It'll work as ladder without rungs, to reach the first level of the scaffolding. The rest is an uphill maze for anyone who’s as badass as Spiderman. He asks: Who’s going first?
