Still January around White Castle, Monmouthshire
A misty walk to White Castle
but the hills not totally obscured.
We remember the clear panorama all around
the last time we walked this walk;
Castle entry free this time of year –
and the place to ourselves –
the King and Queen walk their domain
and view the views
and the tower remains,
the clogged up state of part of the moat
(awaiting the arrival of maintance,
ticket-selling spring staff?).
Remember the banks of violets seen before;
now all around suspended growth,
some lush green short grass,
a few catkins shaking open,
dry stick trees,
but a beautiful ivy spread on
one of the stone walls of the castle.
