Of drifting and reviving

cf Psalm 85
The fundamentals of our faith
bring life, delight, and zeal,
With time may come complacency,
formal belief, appeal
of novelties attracting,
from saving truth distracting.
A worldly world will seek to pull
us from our God so faithful,
unthinkingly to drift away –
our hearts are weak and sinful.
and Satan seeks to draw us –
So plead, ‘O Lord, restore us!’
What coldness comes when life’s adrift,
forgetful, wandering,
what barrenness and lethargy.
Revival, joy will bring.
So don’t pretend that all is well,
pray God infuse with life, infill!
Restore, reverse the damage, Lord,
revive and reinstate
to joy with You, gain fruitfulness
– oh, what a happy state!
with praise, and glad for usefulness,
receiving love with thankfulness.
Thus others all around are drawn
to hear of peace and Life
that yields more than when pleasure-bent:
with lessening of strife.
And righteousness increases
deceitfulness decreases!
