Drinking Water

The man on the bridge told me
about the reservoir
and drinking water
and how we should do washing up
with bowls half full
and not flush the toilet every time

we piss.
He told me he had known my dad
that we wore the same shaped spectacles
that he greyed at 35.

On the bridge we counted the lorries
and looked at cars pulling into the forecourt
of the petrol station
and watched people's faces
as they waited for the tank to fill.
