The First Socialist
I once met a man who fell of his perch
Who was trapped in a life not living
He stole a bible from a church
Just to se if he could be forgiven
He said he’ll believe in any kind of god
Though such faith didn’t keep him strong
He said he often changed who was his god
Whilst waiting for the real one to come along
In a world full of hypnotists and lion slayers
Where the whips have the power to keep us tame
If you’re on your knees saying their kind of prayers
Live for today because tomorrow they still gain
I once met a woman of whom nothing was expected
She met a man who offered her the sky
He took her life her dignity and he wrecked it
And left her thinking I’ve no more tears to cry
She walked to church looking for salvation
Some sacred soap to wash away a sin
The reverend at the door offered up damnation
You’re not a member so you can’t come in
In a world full of witch doctors and smiling liars
Where the rich have dreams that we cannot smell
They bought the steeple the church and the spires
They kept the coins we threw into the wishing well
The promises are sold to we who misunderstand
As the power of the few select who they kiss
And false gods are now manufactured by hand
Yet Jesus was the world’s first socialist
All hail the merchandise the banners of fools
Redemption is paid by cash and credit card
What use is death in a crypt full of jewels
Whilst those in need are broken and scarred
So if you’re out there watching oh holy man
Come on down and see who gets paid
I’m sure you’ll agree with your dad
This world isn’t the best thing you ever made
