I spooned the sizziling courgettes
that she had left on the stove
oil and chilli
Slipping a small burnt one into my mouth
I thought about my afternoon
the beers with Dad,
the dull clouds in the sky,
my brother’s lonely wedding just hours before,
the dinner party tonight
and how I already knew
I wouldn’t eat much of the potato salad
I flicked another soft piece of burning courgette with my tongue
and realised
getting old is fine
BUT
getting old with a good woman
is better
