Down the road came a horse and rider and the two farmers who were looking for their runaway horse asked the rider, “Pardon me, sir but have you seen a riderless horse come down this road? For it has run away from our farm”.
But the rider of the horse said nothing and refused even to look at the two men which they both thought was very impertinent of him considering that he was obviously no gent but a ragged peasant like themselves, judging by his clothes.
However, the farmers excused the ragged fellow on the horse politely and he rode on by them.
But, a bit farther down the road they passed by another mans farm and, standing in the middle of a field, they saw a very unhappy looking farmer shaking his head.
“Beg your pardon, sir”, they asked the man, “But have you seen a riderless horse come down this road? For it has run away from our farm”.
“Yes!”, said the man, angrily “I have seen a horse and bloody chased it half way across my bloody field aswell. The bloody thing has pinched my bloody scarecrow!”.
