The Ideal Place

I am in a coffee bar
that offers free Wi-Fi.
I open my laptop
but don’t get any signal
and I’m left high and dry.
I wait for my cappuccino
while the barista is toiling
over the coffee machine
that’s bubbling and steaming.
I get my pristine notebook
and start dreaming
of being the next J.K. Rowling.
(I’ve read she was at her best
when she wrote in cafés.)
I miserably fail this test
and my pride takes a knock;
not a single idea enters my head
and my notepad stays blank.
I fear I may have a writer’s block.
Perhaps the ideal place is my bed
in which, in the small hours,
my inspiration flourishes.
my inspiration flourishes.
That is why I have set aside
a bedside table and a lamp,
a ream of paper and a pen.
I just hope that I won’t get
a writer’s cramp.

I suppose writer's block is a kind of writer's brain cramp.
Do ideas come when you look at a page, or do you reach for a page when ideas come? The cafe seemed like the former, the bed seemed like the latter!

I enjoyed this - I always takepaper and a pen to a cafe, just to look important, of course. And mostly I write lists and brain storms about what I would be writing if I could get round to stringing those sentences together!
