Chapter 9
Mr Sykes Magic Kite
On Dilly Dally Hill the wind blew fluffy dandelion seeds through the air . Mr Sykes walked slowly against the wind that took the hat off his head and it went tumbling down the hill far away .
He laughed and thought to himself ,
“ Well, I should have seen that coming . It’s a perfect day for flying a kite . As a matter of fact, I think I’ll do just that .“
So, with the money he saved for a rainy day he went to the hardware store and bought everything he needed to make a kite . Then he went home and went straight into his workshop .
He made a cross frame from bamboo and placed an anchor hook for the kite string, at the junction of the cross section . Then he proceeded to make a diamond shape around the bamboo cross frame .
Following that he covered the frame work with a light , high visible material that could be seen miles away .
Secret eyes were closely watching him at work .
Disguised as fluffy little scruffy teddy bears on shelves around the workshop the fairies of flight were waiting for Mr Sykes to finish his work before adding a final touch to the kite.
Mr Sykes finished the tail of the kite and added large ball of string . Then he stood back and
ran his good eye over all his work .
He was satisfied with what he had done and decided it was time to call it quits so he went to bed .
Then the fairies of flight appeared and started flying around the workshop whistling their funny little tunes and making their extra special magic that would transform an ordinary kite into a magic flying kite .
The next morning as soon as Mr Sykes finished breakfast, he took his kite to the Dilly Dally hills for its first flight .
The wind welcomed him back and removed his hat once again .
He laughed and said quietly .
“That’s two hats you owe now “
As he said that the wind changed direction and blew the two hats back to him, they landed at his feet and they ran around in circles blown by the wind .
“ Well , thank you for that . What was lost has been found . “
He put away his hats then placed his kite on the ground .
He unwound a length of string and was just about to run with his kite against the wind when the kite rose by itself into the air .
It rose about twenty feet in the air and suddenly music began to play in the sky and the kite stared to spin and swirl in circles as if it was dancing in the sky and he heard a gentle voice say to him.
“Your right to fly this magic kite depends upon the wind , but we are the fairies if the flight and the right is ours to share . So, we have chosen you to fly our magic kite and if you like on any day, we can take you far away “
Mr Sykes grinned and said ,
“Can you take me a million miles away, to a place I’ve never seen, just so I know how high I can fly with the fairies of flight “
And then and there Mr Sykes was taken up into the sky holding on to the string of his magic kite . He flew into the sky to a place in the clouds where the fairies of flight were waiting and they took control of the kite in flight as it made its way under a rainbow and through these colourful hoops that appeared from nowhere in the sky and there before his eyes he saw a land where everything flew . There was flying fish and flying houses , flying creatures and flying spaceships and fairies that flew to castles in the sky that hovered above the land . He was given a guided tour by the fairies of flight who told him he could return anytime he wanted because his magic kite would know the way .
Then in that moment he was brought back to earth and he stood there and grinned as the wind blew his kite overhead on the Dilly Dally Hills .
He reeled in his kite as calmly as you like until it was back on the ground .
Then he thought to himself ,
‘’Well, that was something out of the blue , I never would have expected that to happen to me “
He carried his kite back to his home and put it away for another day .
