It was four in the morning.
Arjun could not sleep a wink, sitting on his bed with his sheets rumpled. He got up and, after putting on a shirt, paced the length of the room as he cussed under his breath.
He studied the walls of his room and realized how bare they were with a only a monotonous grey. His room was always a comfort, helping him focus on his theses and project, but now the walls looked the same way he felt; empty and closing in on him.
The sudden ringing of the phone broke the utter and complete silence, giving life where there was only a deadly silence. The ringing suddenly became an ominous sound to him. A sound that only the cry of a primal beast could make. Shivering uncontrollably, he picked up the phone on the fourth ring.
"Hello."
Arjun didn’t even recognize his own whispered and wheezy voice. It didn’t make a difference, as only silence greeted him on the other end.
“Hello!”
His voice, still meek and timid showed a bit of annoyance this time. Looking at his arms and hands, he realized he was sweating profusely in a December chill.
There was no answer from the other side. The silence was absolute,no static of poor connection,Not even the sound of breathing of the speaker on the other side.Pure silence,Deathly silence.
For the Last 3 days, Dr. Arjun Shastri, Head of Faculty of Psychology at ULCA, has been receiving calls at four in the morning. At first he thought his students were playing some form of prank, and he was determined to investigate, but the call he received the other day left him panic stricken. There were screams of torment and agony. Not of one person, but of many; a crowd. All of them seemingly begging for mercy.
It was as if he was listening or watching a horror movie with a scene that included a medieval torture chamber. Although disturbing, he decided to wait before calling any of the authorties. The silence continued until the voice beckoned to him as if from the farther reaches of his mind.
"Save me,Arjun"
A chill went through his spine, through each vertebrae surging the entire lenght of his back,He dropped the phone.
His ,once handsome face was ashen now,his green eyes ,were empty, staring , at something from the Other place.
He could not move.
He recognised the voice. It was of Tanya,His wife.
Tanya had died,5 years ago in a car crash.
