Preoccupied by the stabs of jealousy and betrayal piercing my heart.
"How could she do this to me?" my mind screamed. I felt the stinging
sensation of tears accumulating at the outer corners of my eyes, but
they passed unnoticed.
I started to feel as pathetic as I did invisible. If only I had spent
fewer hours in front of the mirror, maybe the pain would have been
less. But I had worn the new Mango pants I was saving for a special
event. And the pain was unbearable.
"Would I be to overdressed in a skirt?" I asked Jessica only hours
before.
"I think so," she replied.
I hung up the phone and went back to my closet, throwing all the skirts
in an ever-growing pile of clothes I couldn't wear.
"Calm down, Megan," Jessica said when we had gotten to the caf? we were
supposed to meet Jake in. "We're fifteen minutes early!"
"No, I told him we'd meet him at eight, not nine, and it's eight forty
five now." I replied, the panic visible in my quivering voice.
"Just calm down," she repeated. "Tell me about this Jake guy. What does
he look like?"
"Like Prince Charming," I mumbled distractedly. "He has brown hair,
brown eyes, kind of dark-"
"And he's wearing a powder blue shirt and khakis?" she
interjected.
"Huh?"
"Right behind you. See?"
I turned around in my seat, and there was Jake, coming through the
door. His eyes fell on me and he smiled as he made his way through the
bustling coffee shop to reach my table. I felt my heart pound wildly
with excitement against my rib cage and I wondered if my cheeks were
getting crimson.
But now my cheeks really were crimson. But I was flushed with anger. I
didn't really pay attention to the conversation. I was just looking at
his face. Completely absorbed into what Jessica was saying. Mesmerized
by her eloquence. I shifted slightly to look at her. Completely
ignorant of&;#8230;
"Ow, Megan!" Jake exclaimed. "You bumped into my leg."
"I'm sorry," I said. My voice was shaky but not because I was on the
verge of tears. It was because I still couldn't get over the bolt of
electricity that shot through me when my knee touched his leg.
He shrugged indifferently and looked back at Jessica. "What were you
saying?" he asked her. And my best friend continued her story, which
had actually happened to me. Then he laughed when she finished.
The way he smiled at her broke my heart. It was the way I always dreamt
he'd smile at me.
